Although this is not a complete answer to improving health care in the US, take a minute to read the Op-Ed from the NY Times on October 24 which compares the methods used to build a great baseball team to improving outcomes in medicine by using evidence based interventions. Most providers are very much aware of what protocols work. For instance We know that diabetics who don’t smoke, check their blood sugar regularly, exercise, eat well, watch their cholesterol, etc, have significantly fewer complications. However, all diabetics are not encouraged to incorporate 100% of these into their lives. Of course judgement is very important. But, how about encouraging more consistent care?
