Studying What Works in Medicine

When I heard that President Obama’s plan to reduce health care costs included a provision to determine what health care interventions work, I was ecstatic.  Much of what is done in health care does not work and conversely a lot of what has been shunned as SCAM is very effective.

Hypnotherapy, for instance, is evidence based, helps promote relaxation, wellness and good habits.  It is without detrimental side effects.   It’s very cost effective and could be used much more than it already is.

The response I’ve received from much of the medical community and health insurance companies who could benefit hugely from what I do has been lukewarm.  I had naively thought that health care providers really cared about outcomes and health insurance companies would welcome a chance to lower medical bills.  Some do but for many providing health is all about dollars and cents.

Check out NY Times article of a couple days ago (I’ve been very busy) “New Effort Reopens a Medical Minefield”.
