The Value of Maturity

Last week’s ditching of the Airbus in the Hudson River should hold a lot of lessons for the airlines.

It seems to me that much of the trouble with our economy results from greed.  I have it on pretty good authority that the airlines are not exempt.  Mature pilots have usually been with an airline for a long time and earn more money.  I hear that many airlines would just as soon see them retire and be replaced by less expensive and also less experienced help.  As a passenger and the mother of an airline captain, I’ve noted varying degrees of skill levels.

So, now we have seen a potential tragedy.  What is the value of 155 lives?  Was it worth the cost of a seasoned flight crew?  In addition to the human suffering that was averted, the world knows  what is possible.

I hope all the airlines are paying attention to this and adjust their philosophies appropriately.

I also heard that our love of wildlife in the form of not allowing measures to manage flocks of birds living near the airports place our flight crews and passengers in danger frequently.
