Two More Thoughts For Improving Health

It seems to me that there is too much “compartmentalization” in our health care system.  Years ago, I watched a young father of 2 die of varicella pneumonia, in part, because not one person coordinated his care.  He had an infectious disease doc, a nephrologist,  pulmonologist etc.  Each specialist managed only the organs assigned to him.

To be at your best, it’s important to be aware.

If you work in a Nuclear Power Plant, the levels of radiation you’re exposed to are monitored.  What if you are just a consumer of health care? Probably not.  Last week’s NY Times has an article Study Finds Radiation Risk for Patients.

Another area that is frequently overlooked or ignored is Sleep Apnea.  Many people are reluctant to be screened for this since there are only 2 common treatments a C-PAP machine and surgery.  There is at least one more that I am aware of;  a dental appliance much like a night guard that gently moves the lower jaw forward to open the airway.  In addition to a host of ailments such as atrial fib, diabetes, obesity and strokes, a Reuters article claims it increases one’s risk of premature death by 46%.  Yikes.   Reuters Article.

We can all play a powerful role in changing the health care system by being aware, educated about our options  and playing an active role in our health and wellness.  Be the conductor of the symphony of your health
