The professional Journal “Cell Metabolism” has reported the findings of Professor Matthew Watt, Monash University. A correlation between Diabetes and Obesity has been noted for a long time. However, this is the first study to show just how this happens.
Fat cells release a protein PEDF (pigment epithelium-derived factor) which is released in to the blood stream. This causes muscle and liver tissue to be desensitized to insulin. More insulin is needed to maintain normal blood sugar levels. The pancreas becomes overworked and shuts down production.
The effects are generally reversible by reducing the amount of fat and therefore the release of PEDF.
This study represents a breakthrough which should be valuable in managing Type 2 Diabetes as well as providing incentive for maintaining a healthy weight.
