Have you ever eaten next to nothing one day in an effort to lose extra weight and actually gained weight that day? It seems to be true that inadequate caloric intake puts our bodies into “starvation mode”. The body then holds onto extra weight, water, and the metabolism slows down.
A recent study in San Antonio, Texas has found that many obese children in poor families actually consume too few calories and often eat the wrong foods. I find this yet another example of how we can significantly reduce health care costs by education and prevention. We certainly shouldn’t ignore the value of EMRs and other fairly expensive interventions, but let’s not overlook education, common sense and affordable ideas as well.
